A good study abroad budget is more than a tuition estimate. It should show what you may need before departure, during the first few months and throughout the programme.
Build the budget in five buckets
- Education: tuition, deposits and academic materials.
- Housing: rent, deposits and basic setup.
- Living: food, transport, phone and everyday expenses.
- Official and travel costs: application, visa, insurance and flights where applicable.
- Contingency: a reserve for unexpected expenses.
Think in stages
Create separate totals for pre-departure, arrival/first month and ongoing monthly expenses. This reveals cash-flow pressure that can be missed when everything is combined into one annual number.
Compare scenarios
Prepare a basic scenario and a conservative scenario. The conservative version can use a higher living-cost estimate and include a larger contingency. This is useful when exchange rates or accommodation costs are uncertain.
Track currency and payment dates
Record the currency used by the university and your expected source of funds. Note tuition instalment dates, accommodation deposits and other large payments. Exchange-rate changes can affect the amount required in Indian rupees.
